Introducing the new commemorative book by SCT Arq.
Alumilux has published a compilation of the most outstanding works by the architects Ángel Sánchez-Cantalejo and Vicente Tomás Esteva. SCT Estudio de arquitectura, Mallorca.
Coinciding with the twenty-fifth anniversary of the creation of the SCT studio, formed by the architects Ángel Sánchez-Cantalejo and Vicente Tomás, Alumilux has published a publication that brings together and comments on the main projects carried out over these years, making reference to their ideas and how they have evolved.
The book is organised by the type and chronology of the designs to manifest the concepts not only as a linear progression but rather as a concatenation of ideas. Many of the constructions have been built in Mallorca (Balearic Islands), a feature that has undoubtedly favoured the creation of a type of architecture that is locally inspired.
This architecture also aims to enhance a person’s quality of life by using a module that structures the different spaces. The way of projecting is materialised, for example, in Casa Santa Margarita and in Casa Lama, making the module visible through the pavement. However, sometimes these rules of the game are concealed, even where they exist: “For us, it is more important and interesting to have these tools, criteria and concepts in place than the obligation to demonstrate them,” say the architects.
Their projects range from single-family homes, residential buildings, health centres, museums and so on. Such diversity really shows the architects’ ability to make changes of scale and programme, stepping out of their comfort zone and exploring other sectors, enriching their architecture.
The materials used are very environmentally-friendly and easily recyclable. They mainly opt for concrete, wood and glass to combine three types of materials: one hard and stony, one softer and one for transparency. For them it is essential that the materials reflect what they really are: emphasising their nobility and authenticity.
In short, their architecture aims to emphasise the creation of spaces aimed at the happiness and comfort of the people who inhabit them, responding to a terrain, a cultural context and a landscape with which to begin the creative process.
