Jambs surrounded by art
At the beginning of 2022 we started work on the complete renovation of the Valeriola Palace. Our DNA will remain forever in the new Centro de Arte Hortensia Herrero (CAHH).
Work on the refurbishment of the Valeriola Palace, located in the historic centre of the city of Valencia, with the participation of Alumilux, began in 2018. It is a Baroque style palace built in the 17th century, with a meeting point at its feet in an enclave of great historical value: the Roman circus and the old Jewish quarter.
The architectural project, conceived by ERRE arquitectura, seeks to restore the nobility of this majestic building to accommodate the new Centro de Arte Hortensia Herrero (CAHH), which will house works by world-renowned artists such as Anish Kapoor, Georg Baselitz, Andreas Gursky and Anselm Kiefer. For the founder of the CAHH, Hortensia Herrero, it was very important to put Valencians themselves at the centre of the project, bringing to the city the collections of artists that would be found today in London or New York.
For this project, Alumilux proposed the use of a single material: aluminium, for all windows, frames and external louvres. Steel is most commonly used in this type of construction as it is considered to be a more noble material. We, on the other hand, make the case for aluminium in high-quality craftsmanship and do not hesitate to use it when it benefits the architects’ proposal. In addition, aluminium was superior to steel in the important area of corrosion, durability and ease of handling, thanks to its light weight.
The work is divided into three phases: a first phase of foundations, structure and demolition; a second phase of rehabilitation of the palace; and finally, the fitting out of the facilities at the arts centre. To date, the first phase of work has been completed and the palace is currently being refurbished. It is estimated that in 2023 it will be ready to house the new Hortensia Herrero Art Centre.
