The Cities We Want. Girona.
Girona was one of the five cities chosen by the International Architecture Congress 2021 to hold a debate organised by the Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad and Arquitectes per l’Arquitectura.
On 13 and 14 June 2022, the conference “Les ciutats que volem” (The cities we want) was held in Girona, jointly organised by the Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad and the association Arquitectes per l’Arquitectura, with the support of Girona City Council, to reflect on and rethink the urban planning, mobility and economic models of municipalities.
Among other specialists, Bet Capdeferro, Belinda Tato, José Morales, Miguel Anxo Fernández Lores, Josep M. Aguirre, Narcís Sastre (as moderator) and Josep Camps (as curator) took part in the different dialogues, all of them of great relevance in their respective specialities.
Intermediate cities, such as Girona, play a key role in achieving a balance of exchange between the countryside and densely urbanised areas, preventing the decline of communities. For this reason, the organisation chose Girona as one of the five “intermediate cities” in which to hold the debates. The others were Valencia, Bilbao, Granada and Pontevedra.
Density, public spaces, mobility and social and territorial balance are some of the aspects that were brought up in the debate sponsored by Salvi Lighting, Durbanis, Fustes Garolera, and of course, Alumilux.
For all the details and final conclusions, we recommend the book by the Fundación Arquitectura y Sociedad, which will be published once all the debates in the other locations have been concluded.
